Executive summary & context

Equip ReD’s consultants to be more creative with quant: not experts, but fluent enough to build robust mixed methods into proposals and projects, and credibly discuss data with clients.

The challenge

A competitive threat and a stretched team

Clients increasingly expect rigorous quantitative work and data science. ReD has lost proposals because the quant approach wasn’t deemed concrete enough, and some consultants don’t feel confident in the mixed methods they include in proposals.

A core group of highly capable quant practitioners is stretched thin, with no space to evangelise practices or help every consultant build the muscle for more rigorous data science work.

The opportunity

Confident, creative quant enthusiasts

Consultants who can confidently build concrete, rigorous quant into proposals, credibly pitch and drive larger, multi-method projects, and reinforce ReD’s mission to be the world’s leading institute for applied social science.

What will improve

Stronger proposals

More proposals including a mixed-methods approach, working towards the goal of ½ of all proposals including quant.

More ambassadors

A growing, self-organising group who keep using and deepening data science skills, building momentum and freeing up ReD’s quant beacons.

Quant Kit for ReD

Three hands-on workshops, facilitated in the room by Francesca Desmarais. Each gives ReD consultants a shared vocabulary and practice using quantitative tools to answer strategic questions.

  • Practice, not hypotheticals. Every concept is learned by doing, so consultants get first-hand experience working with data and build their confidence from the start.
  • Built for qualitative practitioners. Sessions lead with visuals, stories and context, not maths and jargon, and progress from the data basics to statistical inference.
  • Building a partnership with AI. Custom AI context files set the right guardrails for each session, which are slowly removed as things get more complex: from no AI, to AI as tutor, to AI as partner.
  • Applied to ReD’s work. The final session applies everything to a brief, with groups split between public behavioural and survey sources, plus an overview of which datasets exist and where to find them.
  • Anchored in ReD’s team. ReD’s quant beacons join the sessions as hands-on experts and are set up to become champions afterwards, so the learning keeps going once the workshops end.

How it will work

Goal: Build methodological intuition for statistics and data analysis. Across three sessions, ReD consultants will build a shared vocabulary and practise solving questions with quantitative tools.

Engage beacons early. ReD’s quant beacons already have a perspective on how quant is used today in proposals and projects, and where it gets stuck. Bringing them in first means they can provide input to lightly shape the exercises and sets them up to be champions both during the sessions and afterwards.

How they lightly shape the exercises. They share the kinds of questions and data that come up in ReD’s work and the datasets worth knowing, so briefs feel concrete and relevant. Together we agree their role as hands-on experts in the sessions and champions afterwards.

Assessment & ROI review 2–3 min surveys · call in Apr

Before and after surveys. A 2–3 minute survey before the first session and again after the final session, to gauge the value of the workshops and the key learnings: confidence with data science intuition, judgement with AI, and excitement to continue working with quant.

Open discussion, two months on. Francesca will share back the survey results, then we discuss what impact has been made: the share of new proposals with mixed methods against today’s ⅓, the team’s confidence with their capability to execute on these proposals, and whether a group of enthusiasts is forming.
